My Story
Recently, I met a girl who is about to embark on a new adventure, moving to Ireland for a scholarship. She lives with autism and will spend several years there. When I asked how she was managing her autism, she said she was “managing.”
WOW!
That’s a red flag if ever there was one. Managing expectations isn’t enough. Immigration and shifting your life to another part of the globe require massive adaptation, especially when the culture is so different. There will be stress—both positive and negative. The number of unknown trigger points will multiply. I sensed she thought she could do it alone.
In 2015, I moved to the UK without knowing I had autism. Picture this: a small-town person landing in the sensory overload of Paddington Business Centre in London. The sheer number of impulses, the lack of a support network, and the constant need to adapt were almost too much to handle.
The Power of Transcendental Meditation
Transcendental Meditation (TM) was my saving grace. It balanced my nervous system, provided ongoing stress release, and gave me just enough flexibility. My out-of-the-box thinking allowed me to provide creative solutions at work. However, the influx of impulses in my new environment made me – still – somewhat rigid. I struggled to enjoy London and its buzz.
Overwhelm was my greatest enemy, but I needed flexibility and adaptation. TM became my sanctuary. The practice made me resilient and stronger, peaking my performance. My thinking became clear again, and I could react with openness. Ah, the joys of a calm mind!
Discovering Reconnective Healing
The next level of connectedness for me was Reconnective Healing (RH). Always open to alternative ideas for progress, I believed there was a better way to live on the autism spectrum. RH provided a new NEXT level of resilience. My senses finally started working for me.
My first RH session was profound and life-changing. I felt like I had finally arrived in my body, connecting quickly and steadily to my authentic self. It was a transformative experience, melting away the masks I had grown over the years. I felt truly me for the first time.
This deep connection also came with a sense of grief for what I had missed for years, but I celebrated the newfound empowerment. Transitioning to London again involved fitting in and meeting expectations in a senior position at a multinational company. Despite performing well, I often felt disconnected and lacked resilience. After my first RH session, there was a major shift. My solutions came from my soul and heart, becoming even more brilliant.
Offering Support Through Mentorship
Now, I provide RH sessions to others in transition. It works like magic, giving you stamina, endurance, and empowerment. It connects you back to the part of you that is whole, true, and uniquely you.
Immigration and changing countries can be overwhelming, especially for someone with autism. But with the right support and mind-body practices, you can navigate these transitions smoothly. Embrace your neurodiversity, own it, and support it in the right way.
